Gather's Worklog Variance Categorisation Boosts Cubby Construction's Productivity Analysis

September 25, 2024
Using Gather, Cubby analysed 1,465 records, diagnosing production issues in hours rather than the weeks it'd have taken weeks.

Gather, the leading construction record management system (RMS), has introduced a worklog variance categorisation feature that enables rapid identification of productivity issues. Cumbria-based Cubby Construction has leveraged this tool to analyse causes of reduced productivity at unprecedented speeds.

On the Carlisle Southern Link Road (CSLR) drainage installation project, Cubby Construction's site team captured over 1,465 shift records using Gather's RMS. Swift analysis of 4,045 variance categories revealed that unexpected physical conditions, lack of appropriate materials, and communication gaps impacted planned project delivery. This analysis, which would have taken months with traditional paper-based methods, was completed in hours.

Aligned with NEC4 Clause 60.1

To facilitate real-time analysis, Gather aligned worklog variance categories with potential compensation event triggers outlined in NEC4 Clause 60.1. By consistently categorising variances, Cubby Construction linked them to specific causes using structured data, simplifying the process of establishing compensation under NEC4 and minimising potential payment delays.

William Doyle, founder and CEO of Gather, emphasises, "Our mission is to accelerate sustainable construction. Without timely payment for those who deliver the works, nothing would be truly sustainable. That's why I created Gather – to ensure contractors get paid on time, in full, and for everything."

Tommy Cubby, Director of Cubby Construction, transitioned his family business from paper site diaries to Gather's RMS for consistent, structured, quality site data. After implementing the software across his 300-employee business over 18 months, he's impressed by the power of data: "Gather eliminates the 'he said, she said' from the conversation. With consistent, well-rounded data from site, we can now communicate calmly using facts, comparing our productivity target to actual delivery."

Ian Adams, Head of Commercial at Cubby Construction with over 30 years of quantity surveying experience, praises Gather: "We've grown used to two-dimensional site records, thinking of allocation sheets as the end product. I hadn't even imagined asking these questions."

All operation data in one place

Cubby Construction is now exploring integration of their health, safety and environmental (HSE) document system and human resources management system with Gather. Tommy Cubby states, "We anticipate Gather will become our key provider of operational data. It's been a journey of discovering the power of data you can rearrange, interrogate, and use for decision-making. We've just scratched the surface."

The company's leadership team is impressed by Gather's prompt, empathetic customer service. Adams explains, "Gather haven't just sold us software. They're genuinely interested in our problems and offered a solution I didn't imagine could be solved with site data."

Adams and his team of 10 quantity surveyors now review and categorise shift records and variances daily. Areas lagging in productivity are highlighted for real-time optimisation, and early warning events are flagged for review.

Outstanding customer service

Doyle is pleased that Gather's RMS has transformed how Cubby Construction captures and interacts with site data: "These precious records can help contractors like Cubby Construction write better estimates and secure more worthwhile jobs. We're here to support that."

Cubby commended Gather's rapid response: "Team Gather responded to our request swiftly and professionally. Using Gather, they extracted critical data and provided insights on variations and delays in our project. This not only saved Cubby Construction financially but also safeguarded our reputation. I cannot recommend Gather highly enough."

Founded in 2016, Gather provides site records management solutions built by practitioners, for practitioners. Its paperless RMS pushes the boundaries of conventional site diaries, revealing the benefits of consistent, structured, digital site data for field teams, office management, and business owners.
